Bernard Tomic in clash with Alex de Minaur after Lleyton Hewitt drama

Bernard Tomic has set up what could be a spicy clash with Alex de Minaur at the Atlanta Open, with both Aussies winning on Thursday.

Tomic sealed his spot in the the quarter-finals after downing fellow Australian Matt Ebden, while 20-year-old compatriot Alex de Minaur defeated American Bradley Klahn 6-4 6-4 in one hour and seven minutes.

‘WHAT I THINK OF YOU’: Social media video re-ignited Kyrgios-Djokovic war

It sets up what could be a spiteful encounter between Tomic and de Minaur - Lleyton Hewitt’s protege.

Tomic ignited an ugly war with Hewitt at the Australian Open in January, backing up claims from Nick Kyrgios that the Aussie legend spends too much time working with David Cup players like de Minaur.

Tomic alleged that Hewitt acted improperly in handing wildcards to Marc Polmans, and Alex Bolt for the Australian Open.

“All these guys that got wildcards are under a system … Polmans, Bolty, Jordan Thompson,” Tomic said.

“They’re all under his Lleyton’s wing under the management company. It’s all conflict of interest.

“Lleyton’s legacy and his tennis speaks for itself. He’s an unbelievable champion.

“But what he’s doing now is wrong.”

De Minaur finding form

De Minaur, who converted both of his two break points, said he was rapt to hold his serve throughout the match.

"I felt like I kept my focus pretty well," he said.

"I didn't drop serve, which was my main goal. I tried to make a couple of returns here and there and was fortunate enough to get the break.

"Now on to the next match."

De Minaur said he felt right at home playing in Atlanta.

"I love the hot, humid weather," he said.

"And I love playing here - it's a very nice atmosphere."
