Teenage tennis star Holger Rune has defended his behaviour following his ugly French Open exit and claimed Roger Federer was '40 times worse' at the same age.

Rune, 19, bowed at the French Open in the quarter-final after losing to Casper Ruud in an intense and fiery four-set match.

However, Rune was involved in a number of incidents during his exit.

The 19-year-old at one stage appeared to yell towards his player's box for his mother to leave the arena, which she momentarily did as a result of the outburst.

He then offered Ruud a frosty handshake at the net after his loss, which drew criticism from the tennis world.

And Ruud has now called for understanding ahead of his Wimbledon campaign and looked at Federer as an example.

The Danish teen said he is a passionate player and claimed Federer was worse than him on Tour at the same age.

“If you saw Roger Federer as a youngster, he was maybe 40 times worse than I was,” Rune said.

“And he's one of the most beloved tennis players on the tour - so I think I have plenty of time to get an even better image.

"I have an extreme passion for this sport and sometimes I show it too much.

“But I'm 19 years old. I'm still young and I work every day to bring out only the positives in my attitude - and that's a process.

“I just see that as differences and I think that's great. If all people were the same and think the same, it would be horrible to live in this world. It's great that you think what you want, and you like the character you like.”

Rune is preparing to start the Eastbourne International against shock Queen's Club star Ryan Peniston, before Wimbledon.

Holger Rune causes French Open drama

Rune made headlines after his antics against French Open finalist Ruud earlier this month.

And in a bizarre moment, Rune appeared to yell something, in Danish, in the direction of his player's box at a change of ends.

Many viewers on social media claimed the 19-year-old yelled 'leave' to his mother.

The tennis world didn't take kindly to the outburst and called out the Danish superstar for his outlandish behaviour on the big stage.

His handshake at the end with Ruud also didn't win him any fans with tennis great Rennae Stubbs calling him out.
