Taylor Swift’s VMAs dress is a major throwback to *that* Liz Hurley safety pin look

It's safe to say that any music awards event with Taylor Swift in attendance, it's likely the singer will take home at least one trophy. And the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, held last night in New Jersey, were no exception with Taylor taking an impressive nine (!!) wins.

And while we could go on about how significant this moment is – after all, she's now only two wins away from joining Madonna as the biggest winner of all time at the VMAs – we're actually here to talk about Taylor's outfit for the occasion. The singer always pulls it out of the bag with her Grammys looks, so we had high hopes. Luckily, she didn't let us down.

Taylor wore a custom Atelier Versace gown with the halterneck style featuring ruched details, a thigh-high slit and signature gold Medusa buttons down the entire length.

An open back with crossed straps embellished with further Medusa buttons completed the design. Taylor styled the dress with black strappy sandals and layered multiple gold chain necklaces. As for her beauty look, a gold manicure coordinated with the metallic details of her dress, while her hair was styled in a mullet-esque updo perhaps in reference to her country music origins.

If her hair was a throwback, her dress really had us going back in time as it really reminded us of *that* iconic Elizabeth Hurley safety-pin dress. The actress made headlines when she wore the daring look waaay back in 1994 to accompany her then-boyfriend Hugh Grant to the premiere of his film Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Featuring a similar neckline, leg slit, and gold detailing (with Taylor's substituting the safety pins of Elizabeth's dress with buttons), the comparisons aren't that surprising given both dresses were designed by Versace.

Yep, we're calling it a 2023 update on a vintage classic.
