Studio Ghibli has finally released the first trailer for Hayao Miyazaki's new movie The Boy and the Heron.

Previously titled How Do You Live?, the movie was released in Japan in July without any promotion, but that didn't seem to affect its box office performance as it set a new record on its opening weekend.

Studio Ghibli fans outside of Japan won't get to repeat that mysterious release unless you choose to not look at any images or trailers before you see the movie. If that's the case, don't watch the trailer above.

Equally, don't look at these first-look images that were released last month.

The first synopsis for The Boy and the Heron was also revealed last week when the release date for the teaser trailer was revealed by GKIDS Films, who will distribute the movie in the US.

"A young boy named Mahito, yearning for his mother, ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead. There, death comes to an end, and life finds a new beginning," it read.

"A semi-autobiographical fantasy about life, death, and creation, in tribute to friendship, from the mind of Hayao Miyazaki."

Along with the trailer release, it's been confirmed that The Boy and the Heron will be released in the US on December 8, following special previews from November 22.

UK fans will first get to see the film on October 8 and again on October 15 as part of the Special Presentations at this year's BFI London Film Festival, while those across the pond will first get to see it at the Toronto International Film Festival.

But that's not all, Ghibli fans! Spirited Away is coming to the Coliseum in London on April 30, 2024 and will play until July 20, 2024. Tickets opened for priority booking on Tuesday (September 5), and will go on general sale tomorrow (September 7).

It wouldn't be surprising to see tickets go faster than it took Yubaba to turn Chihiro's parents into pigs, so you might want to snap them up quickly.
