Former Chelsea striker Diego Costa has parted company with La Liga club Atletico Madrid.

The 32-year-old had six months left on his contract but wanted to leave the club ahead of time for what the club called "personal reasons".

"We thank him for his efforts through these years and wish him a lot of luck in the next stage of his career," Atletico said in a statement.

Costa won La Liga with Atletico scoring 27 goals in the 2013-14 season, earning himself a move to Chelsea.

He moved back to Atletico in September 2017 but his second spell was less successful.

This season a hamstring injury, a coronavirus positive and subsequent deep vein thrombosis diagnosis reduced his playing time to just two starts.

In addition, Atletico signed a new top forward in the form of Luis Suarez from Barcelona.
