Samantha Stosur has made a strong start to her Strasbourg Open title defence, sweeping into the second round in just 73 minutes.

Stosur, a two-time champion at the clay-court event, fired down 12 aces in a 6-3 6-2 rout of American Sofia Kenin in a promising sign ahead of the French Open starting on Sunday.

The former Roland Garros runner-up could meet Fed Cup teammate Daria Gavrilova in the second round in what would be a rematch of their all-Australian final last year.

Second-seeded Gavrilova takes on American Jennifer Brady in her opener later on Monday night.

Fellow Australian Ashleigh Barty, who lost in the semi-finals to Stosur last year, is the top seed on her return to Strasbourg and also opens her campaign on Monday night.

The world No.18 meets Thai qualifier Luksika Kumkhum.
