Storm under fire again for 'dangerous' tactic against the Raiders

Melbourne Storm have come under fire for a second week in a row for a forward raising an elbow when charging into the tackle.

In the opening set of the game against the Raiders Nelson Asofa-Solomona took a big hit up but appeared to raise his elbow into the defender John Bateman.

The Storm came under fire last week for a similar incident when Souths five-eighth Dylan Walker copped an elbow when making the tackle, but was bizarrely penalised for his reaction after.

During the week, former Souths and Roosters prop Jimmy Smith slammed the Melbourne tactic as “dangerous” on the Bill and Boz show.

“I think it’s a really dangerous part, I think it’s a deliberate act from the players,” Smith said.

“I don’t say they’re deliberately trying to break jaws, I say they’re defending themselves and giving themselves an advantage.

“It was really noticeable on the weekend, especially with someone like (Nelson) Asofa-Solomona.

“He’s a giant on a man 6ft6, lifts the elbow up and it’s at head height and it allows him to get second-phase play.”

Michael Ennis defended the Storm claiming they were doing nothing wrong, but the tactic could potentially injure a defender.
