NRL greats in fiery showdown over NSW Origin 'effort'

Phil Gould and Paul Gallen have gone head to head in a fiery exchange after the former questioned the effort of the NSW Origin side.

Appearing on Fox Sports program 100% Footy, the pair were at loggerheads after Gallen took Gould to task over a column he had written, criticising the players.

Gallen said it was unfair to ‘tar everyone with the same brush’.

“I read your column and I just can’t agree that you think NSW players don’t give their 100 per cent, 100 per cent of the time. I’ve got no doubt that they do,” Gallen said.

“What I’m saying is, just taring everyone with the same brush (is wrong). I don’t agree that everyone doesn’t give 100 per cent.”

Gould however, was sticking to his guns.

The league legend singled out Latrell Mitchell in particular, among others, for not giving everything they had in NSW’s game one loss.

“Did Latrell Mitchell give 100 per cent in game one? We’ll go through the tape and I’ll show you a lot of effort areas where he didn’t,” he said.

“I think a lot of them do, but there were a couple who didn’t.

“You’ve got to pay the penalty if you come in and you don’t give 100 per cent on the field.

“What’s the problem if they look for someone else who can?”

Gallen however, stood by Mitchell.

The Sharks enforcer said it was unfair to judge Mitchell for games where he didn’t dominate scoring and playmaking.

“I can’t say his effort wasn’t 100 per cent,” Gallen said.

“Just because he didn’t go out there and score three tries and make line-breaks and tackles-breaks, it didn’t mean he didn’t give 100 per cent.”

Mitchell ‘disillusioned’ with Origin

A startling new report claims Latrell Mitchell is considering making himself unavailable for NSW selection in the immediate future.

The 22-year-old was dropped for State of Origin II after a below-par performance in the opening game of the series.

And according to the Sydney Morning Herald, he’s so “disillusioned” that he’s weighing up whether he wants to play for NSW again.

“Those close to him believe he will not make himself available for State of Origin duty again in the immediate future,” the SMH report says.

Mitchell's father Matt told the Herald on Monday: "I'm just happy he's back playing well for the Roosters and that's his main concern, just playing consistently.

"The rep stuff is a bonus but the Roosters pay his bills, not NSW.”
