Queensland star in hot water over final-second 'dog shot'

Josh McGuire is facing a one-game NRL ban for his hit on NSW five-eighth James Maloney in the dying moments of Sunday's State of Origin clash.

The Queensland back-rower caught Maloney late in the 80th-minute of the Blues' thumping 38-6 win in Perth, leaving the NSW half needing attention from a trainer as the final siren sounded.

The judiciary has charged McGuire with a grade one dangerous contact head/neck offence.

With four prior non-similar offences in the past two years, North Queensland's McGuire will miss one game regardless of whether he accepts an early guilty plea or not, meaning he'd miss the Cowboys clash with St George Illawarra on Friday.

NSW coach Brad Fittler was unimpressed by the attention on Maloney.

"I'd like to see that last tackle again, the last tackle of the game and some of the stuff that was going on towards Jimmy," Fittler said.

"I'm sure, what is it, the review board or the (match) review committee, they'll have a look at it."

Speaking in the sheds before the charge sheet was handed out on Monday morning, Maloney admitted being unsurprised by some of the treatment.

"A bit of s***. Nothing unexpected," he told AAP.

"I think I was on the ground and there was a swinging arm. That's what it is.

"I'm sweet. It's not surprising. That stuff goes with it."

The hit also sparked anger on social media.

It was one of a number of incidents Maloney was unhappy with after the game, calling the Maroons out on a handful of late shots on his teammates.

James Tedesco and Boyd Cordner both copped hits after first-half passes, the latter sending the Blues captain off for a head injury assessment.

Maloney compared the decisions to let late shots go to the league's crackdown on escorting, which led to the Maroons' contentious penalty try.

"I thought they let a bit of rubbish go from Queensland," Maloney said.

"We had a few; Teddy out the back of a second-man play; he got hit off the ball early and nothing was done. I think Boydo got hit off a ball.

"I thought they let a bit of s*** go early, which was interesting because then you have a penalty try over a little escort and things like that.

"I think they need to work out where the line's drawn because you can't let some go and pull the others up."

Meanwhile, Maroons forward Josh Wallace escaped any charge despite being put on report during the match for a late tackle on Maloney.

The Gold Coast prop, who came off the bench for Queensland, was penalised in the 50th minute when he hit Maloney after the 33-year-old had kicked the ball down field.

Despite the offence Wallace will be free to face Manly on Saturday for the Titans.
