A woman's TikTok video has gone viral after she revealed she was stopped at the supermarket checkout while buying pads for the most bizarre reason.

Bethany Margaret shared her experience on the popular video platform, after she ducked into UK supermarket Sainsbury's to stock up on more sanitary products, but was left shocked when she was asked for her ID.

"Right. I have questions. I have big questions," the 22-year-old said in the clip.

"I just went to Sainsbury's right, and I got ID-ed. I bought one thing, and one thing only," she adds, as she reaches into her shopping bag to pull out the pads.

The clip has been viewed over 210K times with plenty of people sharing their confusion at the scenario.

"ID for pads? What is wrong with the world!?" was one confused comment.

Some who themselves work in retail shared they had never heard of such a thing.

"They should not have ID-ed you. It does not come up on your till to ID for these. I would honestly complain as they shouldn't have done that," one person said.

"Wait, what? I work in retail and this has never been a thing. Very weird," another wrote.

Bethany said she filmed the clip to see if any of her followers had experienced something similar.

"I made the video because I genuinely was confused that a new rule had come into a place where we needed to be ID'd for pads and I had just missed the memo - remember when people were eating detergent pods? I thought it was something like that!" she told the Daily Star after the video went viral.

"The guy didn't explain why he needed to see ID and I was too flustered to ask him why so I just showed it to him."

A few of her followers warned that there may have indeed been an ulterior motive.

"The person was probably trying to look at your info," one user commented.
