Alexander Isak has scored a first-half winner as Real Sociedad defeated Basque Country rivals Eibar 1-0 to strengthen their hold on fifth place in La Liga and a European berth.

The win left Sociedad three points ahead of sixth-place Real Betis and four points in front of seventh-place Villarreal with five rounds remaining.

The teams finishing in fifth and sixth places secure a Europa League berth next season.

It was only the second win for Sociedad in their past seven league matches.

It was the fifth consecutive loss for bottom side Eibar, who are winless in 16 straight league games.

They are seven points adrift of safety and appear destined to be relegated.

Sweden forward Isak scored at Eibar's Ipurua Stadium with a shot from close range in the 26th minute.

Sociedad next visit second-bottom Huesca while Eibar host Alaves, another relegation-threatened team.
