D'Arcy Short has been handed the chance to stake his one-day opening credentials as Australia got their tour of England under way with a tune-up against English county side Sussex at Hove.
The 27-year-old uncapped WA batsman has been called into the international ODI squad with a remit to convince new coach Justin Langer he is the man to add some explosive firepower at the top of the order alongside Aaron Finch.
Sussex won the toss and elected to bowl first, meaning allrounder Glenn Maxwell, at No.4, and Travis Head will also get an early chance to score early-tour runs.
Captain Tim Paine starts at sixth in the order.
Pace bowler Michael Neser is the other uncapped player in the starting XI while Kane Richardson, Jhye Richardson and Andrew Tye, the leading wicket-taker in the recent Indian Premier League, help spearhead the Aussie attack.
Australia have been expecting to cop some stick from the crowds on their tour in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal, but Finch and Short were instead met with polite applause as they walked out to bat at the genteel south coast ground.
AUSTRALIA: Aaron Finch, D'Arcy Short, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Travis Head, Tim Paine (c), Ashton Agar, Michael Neser, Jhye Richardson, Andrew Tye, Kane Richardson.
