Shopper stunned by 'gross' find on Coles grocery item

A Coles shopper has vented her frustrations after discovering a “very gross” patch of green mould on her dinner rolls this week.

The customer arrived home after shopping at the Parkhill Junction store in Berwick, southeast of Melbourne, on Monday to discover the unsightly surprise.

Her six-pack of Coles branded white dinner rolls came with an additional streak of mould, which appeared to have spread across significant parts of at least two servings.

In an unhappy post to the supermarket’s Facebook page, the shopper pointed out the product had not yet passed its best before date.

“Best before date was 26/09/20. Can’t believe these were even on the shelf for sale,” she wrote.

“I understand staff are very busy at this trying time but quality control still needs to be in place.”

She explained that the mould appeared to be “quite advanced” and argued a worker should have spotted the obvious issue before a customer bought the pack.

“The mould was quite advanced and should’ve been picked up a lot quicker. Very gross,” she said.

Photos of the rolls show them inside an unopened sealed plastic pack, which had an opaque label on the front blocking the mould from being visible.

A Coles employee responded to the shopper’s complaint and apologised for her “poor experience”.

They requested the packaging or receipt be returned to the store so she could be refunded.

“We're very sorry to hear of this poor experience with some rolls from our Parkhill Junction store as we pride ourselves on the quality of our Coles Brand products,” part of the response read.

The customer seemed satisfied at the solution and said she looked forward to not encountering the same problem in the future.
