Unseeded Denis Shapovalov has defeated Tomas Berdych in the Italian Open first round, with the victory ensuring he will become the top-ranked Canadian in the world when the revised ATP rankings are released on Monday.
The 19-year-old's 1-6 6-3 7-6 (7-5) success over the 15th-seeded Czech veteran was one of the highlights on a rain-interrupted day in Rome.
"I'm a little bit in shock," Shapovalov said after being informed he would leapfrog compatriot and former world No.3 Milos Raonic, who he beat last week in Madrid on his way to the semi-finals, in the rankings.
"It's crazy that it's come so early... It's a reason to keep working, keep staying motivated and hopefully I can keep going."
Already up to a career-high ranking of 29, the victory over Berdych will move Shapovalov ahead of world No.22 Raonic.
Shapovalov is already the youngest player in the top 30 since Richard Gasquest reached No.17 in 2005 at the age of 19.
David Goffin was pushed to three sets by Italian wildcard Marco Cecchinato before he prevailed 5-7 6-2 6-2 in their second-round encounter.
The Belgian ninth-seed will meet either big-serving Argentine fifth seed Juan Martin del Potro or young Stefanos Tsitsipas in the next round, after the 19-year-old Greek progressed to round two when his opponent Borna Coric retired hurt while 4-1 down in the first set.
German veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber upset American 13th seed Jack Sock 6-4 6-3 to reach the last 16 where he was joined by compatriot Peter Gojowczyk, a 6-3 4-4 winner over Italian wildcard Lorenzo Sonego.
In first-round action, Argentine 14th seed Diego Schwartzman recorded a regulation 6-4 6-1 victory over Chilean qualifier Nicolas Jarry while 16th-seeded Frenchman Lucas Pouille battled past Italian veteran Andreas Seppi 6-2 3-6 7-6 (7-3).
Others through to the second round were Nikoloz Basilashvili and Damir Dzumhur.
Rain delayed play at the start of the day before disrupting things at the end, with fourth-seeded Croatian Marin Cilic's second round match with American Ryan Harrison suspended with the players level at 3-3 in a first set tiebreak.
