Shane Warne linked to surprise move to AFL club

Noted St Kilda Saints superfan Shane Warne could be venturing into the rough and tumble world of the AFL.

The Aussie cricketing legend, who played for the Saints’ under-19 team in the late 1980s, could be a candidate to become a board member for the club.

St Kilda president Andrew Bassat revealed Warne and club legend Nick Riewoldt could both one day become board members on AFL reporter Damian Barrett’s In The Game podcast.

“We’re actually fortunate, there’s a range of people that have sort of started to engage with the club, Shane being one of them, who are passionate about the club, who want to help,” Bassat said.

“So Shane’s already been helpful to us when we ask and so getting him more involved would be great.”

While nothing was officially in the pipeline with Warne at the present time, Bassat said Warne’s passion and sporting experience would make him a good fit for the role.

Bassat also said Riewoldt, who retired from the club two years ago, would also be someone the Saints would court for such a role.

“Oh look, possibly (on the board). It’s not something that’s been discussed in detail but I think Shane’s both a very smart person and a very capable person,” Bassat said.

“Obviously his sporting brain is quite incredible, so if we can get him more engaged in one capacity or another, we’ll certainly consider that for sure

“I think we’ve been open about the fact that both with Nick and with Shane, that they’re both great St Kilda people and just tremendously strong people, successful people.

“(The) professional drive and commitment and the resolve that we sort of talk about needing the club continuing to push forward in — these guys have in spades.

“So if someone like Nick got more involved in the club, we would all welcome that.”
