Sevilla's title hopes battered by Bilbao

Sevilla have suffered a massive blow to their La Liga title hopes with a 1-0 loss to visitors Athletic Bilbao.

Already assured of Champions League qualification, Sevilla could have moved just three points off leaders Atletico Madrid but slid to defeat as Inaki Williams struck at the death to give Bilbao the victory.

Sevilla are on 70 points with four rounds to go.

A victory would have put the top four teams within three points of each other with Real Madrid and Barcelona level on 74 points with Atletico on 76.

Barcelona host Atletico on Saturday while Sevilla visit Madrid on Sunday in two crunch encounters.

Williams scored the winner in an 90th-minute breakaway to dampen Sevilla's ambition of snaring just their second top-flight title and first since 1946.

Lucas Ocampos missed a good chance early on for the host and Ivan Rakitic was narrowly off target with another effort.

Unai Simon made a fine save to deny Youssef En-Nesyri as Sevilla continued to dominate but failed to find the breakthrough.

Ocampos had an overhead kick which deflected wide early in the second half and En-Nesyri headed off target as their desperation for a winner grew, and it played into Bilbao's hands.

Julen Lopetegui's team had won four consecutive games to put themselves in the middle of the title race while Bilbao move to ninth place and in contention for one of the Europa League spots.

Sevilla still hold a 17-point advantage over fifth-placed Real Sociedad.
