Sevilla remain on track for top-4 finish

Youssef En-Nesyri and Franco Vazquez have scored a goal in each half as Sevilla defeated Elche 2-0 to strengthen their grip on fourth place in La Liga.

The match was postponed from the second round because Sevilla played late into last season in the Europa League, which was delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The home victory has Sevilla on 54 points, nine clear pf fifth-place Real Sociedad after 27 matches.

The top four clubs secure a Champions League spot next season.

Sevilla are three points behind third-place Real Madrid and five points from second-place Barcelona.

Leaders Atletico Madrid is nine points ahead.

En-Nesyri put the hosts ahead with a header in the 43rd minute to net his 21st goal of the season in all competitions.

Vazquez made it two with a minute left to play with a clever backheel past Elche keeper Edu Badia.

Argentine midfielder Vazquez has hardly featured this season for Sevilla and was emotional when asked post-match about his limited game time, with his contract expiring this season.

"Players train in order to play and when they play they are happy," he said.

"I've been here for many years, but the most important thing is what the team are achieving."

Sevilla have won eight of their past 10 league games, with seven clean sheets in that stretch.

They were coming off a home victory against Real Betis in the Seville derby.

Elche, who beat Sevilla at home two weeks ago, are one point above the relegation zone.
