Why Serena Williams fans are fuming at Carlos Ramos again

The man at the centre of the infamous US Open final has drawn the ire of Serena Williams fans yet again.

Carlos Ramos, who hit Serena with three code violations during her meltdown at Flushing Meadows, is back in the chair at the Australian Open.

He was in charge of Alexander Zverev’s clash with Milos Raonic in the fourth round on Monday, and dished out another code violation when Zverev obliterated a racquet.

However there were a number of fans who thought Ramos should have issued a violation earlier in the match.

Zverev smashed his racquet into the Rod Laver Arena surface an astonishing nine times, completely shattering the frame and mangling the strings.

But that wasn’t the first time he took his frustration out on his racquet.

The young German had thrown his racquet a few games earlier, but escaped a code violation because he didn’t break it.

However a number of fans questioned why he wasn’t pinged when Serena was.

Why Ramos was right

By the letter of the law, a code violation for racquet abuse will only result if the racquet is broken and the player can’t continue to use it.

The reality is Serena broke her racquet and had to change it, while Zverev didn’t.

Ramos hit Serena with a code violation after she smashed her racquet in the US Open final – her second violation after she allegedly received coaching from the stands.

That resulted in a point penalty and eventually a game penalty when he hit her with another code violation for verbal abuse.

The fact that some fans are still claiming sexism is a factor in umpiring decisions reiterates the belief that Serena needs to address her controversial claims about Ramos.

The 37-year-old suggested Ramos had treated her differently than he would if she was a man, but has refused to speak about it ever since.

There were some fans who also felt like Zverev was being celebrated for his outburst, when Serena was widely condemned.
