There are fears for the welfare of a 42-year-old man who disappeared in the NSW Hunter region nearly five weeks ago.

John Simpson was last seen driving on Great North Road in Laguna near Cessnock on April 13 and police believe his car broke down on the way home.

"Police and family hold serious concerns for his welfare as his disappearance is out of character," NSW Police said in a statement on Tuesday.

Officers searched a Laguna property last week and on Tuesday will scour more of the area with the help of Police Rescue, the Dog Unit, Operational Support Group and SES.

Mr Simpson is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 180cm tall, with a medium build, brown hair and a grey beard.
