Gareth Southgate has spoken out very strongly on the treatment of Harry Maguire in his post-match press conference in Glasgow tonight.

“I mean from a Scotland fans point of view I get it, I have no absolutely no complaints of what they did,” he said. “It is a consequence of ridiculous treatment of him for a long period of time, frankly, and I think our fans recognised, ‘OK, there might be a bit of heat from our own supporters but we are not going to have it from others getting into him.’

“But it is a joke. I have never known a player to be treated the way he is, not from the Scottish fans by our own commentators, pundits, whatever it is, they have created something that is beyond anything I have ever seen.

“He has been an absolute stalwart for us in the second most successful English team for decades, he has been an absolutely key part of that. I have talked about the importance of our senior players, he has been crucial amongst that and every time he goes on the field the resilience he shows, the balls he shows is absolutely incredible so he is a top player and we are all with him.

“Our fans were brilliant with him tonight. I feel fairly strongly about it yes. He is good, he is great, we have had a good win and he was a big part of that. He has fronted up as he always does which is enormous credit to his character.”

The international allegiances of Newcastle duo Elliot Anderson and Harvey Barnes have been a particularly hot topic of conversation in the build-up to tonight’s game.

The Whitley Bay-born Anderson - who has a grandmother from Glasgow - had represented both nations at youth level before receiving his first senior Scotland call-up before last week’s latest Euro 2024 qualifying win in Cyprus.

Refusal to experiment would be opportunity missed for Southgate

Harry Kane needled some Tottenham supporters last week when he described feeling “a different pressure” at Bayern Munich, writes Dan Kilpatrick in Glasgow.

Speaking ahead of England’s draw with Ukraine, Kane explained that “it wasn’t a disaster” for Spurs to go two games without winning, but at his new club, the perennial Bundesliga champions, even a comfortable win was deemed unacceptable if the performance was not up to scratch.

Kane could easily have added that the same scrutiny also applies to England, who are under a degree of pressure to avoid back-to-back games without a win in tonight’s friendly against Scotland at Hampden Park.

Gareth Southgate’s side were positively breezing through European Championship qualifying with four consecutive wins, including over Italy in Naples, before a first blip against Ukraine prompted all the familiar grumblings with the manager to resurface: Southgate is too negative, too unwilling to experiment, too loyal to senior players, too slow to react in games.

“We kind of know the cycle frankly with England,” Southgate said here about the reaction to Saturday’s 1-1 draw. “I’ve been in the job long enough now. It’s constant, never ending.”

Southgate: ‘Ridiculous' for England to experiment against Scotland

Not just with Phil Foden, but many England fans wanted to see Gareth Southgate seriously experiment in several areas of the pitch tonight after such a drab display against Ukraine in Wroclaw on Saturday - their first minor blip on the otherwise perfect road to Euro 2024 in Germany next summer.

However, the Three Lions boss has emphatically rejected such calls, calling the suggestion “ridiculous” as he anticipates a really tough and emotionally-charged test against an in-form Scotland side in England’s first friendly since they played the Ivory Coast and Switzerland in a pair of Wembley fixtures last March.

“We’ve got to find the right balance of physical freshness – we’ve had a day less preparation – experience, finding out about some players, winning, playing well,” Southgate said on Monday.

“So, the usual things that are expected of us with England, really.

“But I think the first thing is we can’t fiddle around with the team because we’re playing a top-level side, who are going to be at full tilt and giving us a really high-level challenge.

“So, you can’t overly experiment because that would be ridiculous.”

Gareth Southgate has ­effectively dismissed Phil Foden’s chances of playing centrally for England, saying he is not used in the middle by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola for a reason.

Foden, who has scored three times in 26 games for England, has said he wants to “adapt and become a midfielder” and there is a growing clamour for Southgate to experiment with the 23-year-old in a deeper role, particularly given the doubts over Jordan Henderson’s international future.

Scotland have more than enough about them to claim a win in front of their home fans, especially considering how half-baked England looked at the weekend.

England had to rely on some inspiration from Kane to claim a point against Ukraine, so Southgate could do with more spark in midfield to make a real game of it.
