Shocking footage has emerged of a group of hoons driving motorbikes recklessly, and even doing wheelies, on a busy Melbourne freeway.

Concerned motorists have slammed the group’s hooning near the Bulla Rd exit of the Tullamarine Freeway on Sunday afternoon.

The group is believed to have consisted of 20-30 young individuals, according to witnesses.

Louise, a motorist who saw the “terrifying” behaviour, told 3AW’s Ross Stevenson and Russel Howcroft that the riders were running “through red lights” and onto the grass of the median strip.

“At first there was one or two bikes which sort of came in and out of (traffic), pulling wheelies … really high, dangerous ones,” she said.

“Then there were three to five more weaving out of the cars and then there was just this big roar and it was almost like there was another 20 of them.”

Louise said the riders were swerving towards cars and got so close to her own vehicle that its sensors went off.

“(It was) just really, really scary,” she said.

The riders were wearing helmets, but it’s believed they were not all wearing safety gear or displaying number plates correctly.

Victoria Police officers attended the scene after receiving reports of the “erratic” driving.

“Police have been told motorcycle riders were seen driving erratically on the Tullamarine Freeway and surrounding area, including Bulla Rd and Lincoln Rd, just after 5pm,” a spokesperson said.

“Police patrolled the area and were not able to locate the riders.”

The incident transpired just hours before a teenage boy and girl were killed in an off-road motorbike collision in Grangefields.

The fatal collision brought the number of lives lost on the state’s roads this year to 202, well up on the 162 deaths at the same time last year.
