Maria Sakkari has upset top-seeded Iga Swiatek 6-4 7-5 to set up a surprise final against Estonian Anett Kontaveit at the Ostrava Open.

Kontaveit beat two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova 6-0 6-4 while fourth seed Sakkari at last advanced to her first final since 2019 after losing nine straight WTA semi-finals.

The Greek Sakkari broke the Polish favourite for a 6-5 lead in the final set before converting her first match point when Swiatek's forehand went wide.

Sakkari had also ended Swiatek's French Open title defence in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros earlier this year.

"It was a very high-level match, and I'm very happy that I could bring that level," Sakkari said on the WTA Tour website.

"A title would be ideal, but it's already a very positive week. I am just going to enjoy being in another final tomorrow, and back myself that I can lift the trophy."

Kontaveit, who had upset third seed and Olympic champion Belinda Bencic to reach the semi-finals, maintained her momentum to knock out Kvitova, the world No.10 and No.2 seed, on home soil.

She sent down an ace to create her third match point and converted it when Kvitova's backhand hit the net.

Kontaveit made only seven unforced errors, compared with Kvitova's 28 to beat the Czech for the third time in their eight meetings.
