A fire added extra spark to the Rugby World Cup clash between Japan and Tonga in Whangarei on Wednesday night.
The blaze, clearly visible to all spectators in the stadium, started during the second half.
Rather than alarm the crowd they seemed to revel in the chaos as it burned brightly.
Northland Events Centre manager Jim Lynch told NZN the fire was not inside the stadium.
Tonga shrugged off the distraction to defeat Japan 31 -18. Japan have lost 17 straight matches at the World Cup.
