'Blue murder': Irish fans fume over World Cup referee appointment

Irish fans after fuming after experienced referee Nigel Owens was appointed as the man with the whistle for the quarter-final showdown between New Zealand and Ireland.

Owens is the most experienced referee in the world having taken charge of the most number of Test matches in history, which included the 2015 World Cup final.

But Ireland’s record under the referee, considered one of best in the world, has some fans questioning whether the All Blacks will favour the appointment.

Under the 19 matches Ireland matches Owen has officiated, they have won 10 and lost nine.

While the Irish have never defeated England under Owens in four attempts, their record against New Zealand doesn’t read any better.

Ireland has lost all three games against the All Blacks under Owens’ charge.

However, not many teams could boast a better record against the most dominant rugby team in the world.

But many Irish fans have vented their frustration claiming the All Blacks will benefit from World Rugby’s appointment.

New Zealand will take on Ireland on Saturday in the second quarter-final.
