When it comes to investment pieces, you usually can't beat the classics, those designs which have continued to dominate and impress for decades. But, sometimes a piece comes along which becomes an automatic heirloom. These are newer investment pieces that are destined to become future classics, which we celebrate in our franchise The Modern Icon. This time, we're looking at The Row's Margaux bag.

Of course, The Row has had a number of massive design hits, which – thanks to its Quiet Luxury aesthetic – have continued to remain popular years after they first launched, rather than being cult items that peaked and then waned. This includes the brand's Ginza leather flip flop, its Fisherman sandal and its Half Moon bag. But, the Margaux is in a league of its own for how it has been able to dominate luxury resale sites and spike in value.

Here, we celebrate the Margaux and look into what makes it such a great investment.

The story behind the bag

The Margaux first launched in 2018, and has been re-released each season since in slightly different colourways. A chunky bag in size, but incredibly sleek in silhouette, the style has benefitted from fashion's obsession with the tote, which has seen customers choosing to invest in practical pieces with true longevity, as luxury prices have risen.

The handbag – which comes in four sizes and various neutral tones in leather and suede – features a rounded silhouette and a top handle. It is roomy enough to carry all of your day's essentials, including your laptop and Pilates gear.

As with any The Row design, it is minimalist and not particularly trend-led, and only those in the know can identify where it comes from. For this reason, customers are likely choosing to invest in the style over anything that they might tire of more quickly. And invest they have. The Margaux is usually completely sold out at the various retailers its stocked at, and is selling for almost double its usual price on resale sites including Vestiaire Collective and 1stDibs. For this reason, there's no surprise that TikTok has nicknamed the Margaux 'the new Birkin' and fashion search engine Lyst recently identified it as the hottest product of the moment.

Who has carried it?

Unsurprisingly, more than a few of the world's most stylish celebrities have got their hands on a Margaux. This includes The Row and Quiet Luxury fan Jennifer Lawrence, who was spotted with the burgundy bag in 2023. Meanwhile, Kendall Jenner has the style in both light brown and black, which she teams with her low-key day-to-day looks.

Where to shop

As previously stated, it is supremely difficult to get your hands on a Margaux, so you need to keep your eyes peeled and set alerts at its stockists. In the UK, the bag is stocked on Net-a-Porter, MyTheresa, Selfridges, Harrods, and of course on the brand's own site and in its stores. You may have more luck buying secondhand – check out Vestiaire Collective, 1stDibs, The RealReal, Sellier and Cocoon.
