'YouTube man' Julius Yego wins javelin silver

This might be the best story of the Rio Olympics.

Kenya's Julius Yego's Olympic javelin dream fell just short as he took home the silver medal in Rio, but the journey that brought him to this point is nothing short of remarkable.

Yego decided he wanted to take up the sport, but with not appropriate equipment or a coach, his dreams were just that. Dreams.

That didn't stop the 27-year-old, who fashioned his own javelin out of long sticks and turned to YouTube videos to watch the world's best Olympians and throwing tutorials to hone his technique.

His quick success saw him win the world championships in 2015 and came into Rio as the favourite for gold.

Unfortunately for Yego, he only got one 'competitive' throw in before succumbing to an injury on his second throw, leaving him unable to continue with the competition.

Turns out his opening throw was pretty good, he led the competition after three rounds, eventually finishing with a silver medal for his 88.24m attempt, behind Germany's Thomas Rohler's winning effort of 90.30 metres.

From YouTube videos to a silver medal, Yego is undoubtedly one of the true Olympic heroes of the Rio 2016 Games..
