Wet weather causes chaos in discus, pole vault

Torrential rain during Day 10's track and field program at Rio 2016 almost caused a number of mishaps in the discus and pole vault.

China's Xue Changrui narrowly avoided disaster in the men's pole vault final when he appeared to slip upon take off for a jump.

He dropped his pole and came down awkwardly, landing in a massive puddle of water on the mat, which he only just managed to land on.

Competitors were left fuming when officials decided they didn't need to cover the crash mat, resulting in a drenched landing.

Just moments later Croatian world champion Sandra Perković almost hit a sound recordist during the women's discus.

The discus slipped out of Perkovic's hand as she released it, with the media member scurrying out of the way of the incoming projectile.

The slippery discus resulted in nine of 17 hurlers failing on their first attempt, and six of 17 failing on the second.

"It's atrocious. It's hard to compete in weather like this," said Jamaican hurdler Omar McLeod.

"The water is beaming down in your face and your eyes and it’s real hard."
