Shane van Gisbergen has clawed his way to consecutive victories at the Townsville 500, winning race 16 of the V8 Supercars series for his 10th success of the season.

Starting a Red Bull lockout on the front row, a two-horse race ensued with van Gisbergen and teammate Jamie Whincup fighting for the victory at Reid Park on Sunday afternoon.

Seven-time V8 Supercars champion Whincup pipped van Gisbergen in qualifying but it was deja vu for him as his teammate slipped past in the dying stages of the race for a second consecutive day.

The pair finished one-two yet again, with Shell V-Power Racing's Anton De Pasquale joining them on the podium in what was the same top-three finish as Saturday's race.

"Our cars are unbelievable to drive and the way they handle and look after the tires, we're pretty lucky guys... and I can't thank our engineering team enough," van Gisbergen said.

"Our cars are getting better and better, especially on tracks like this, it's cool to be a part of."

The determining factors for Sunday's race came down to a precise pit stop strategy which paid dividends for van Gisbergen again.

He was given just enough time to chase down Whincup after his teammate's garage decided to undercut early and defend their lead late in the race.

That played into van Gisbergen's hands and the championship leader recorded the 50th win of his career, surpassing the great Peter Brock and moving up to sixth all-time on the Supercars' wins list.

While the New Zealander doesn't give much thought to the title race, he did reflect briefly on the significance of his 50th win.

"It's a pretty awesome number and I've got to drive for some awesome teams in my career," he said.

"I'll look back at that in the future and cherish it, but for now, just focus on getting to 51 (wins)."

While van Gisbergen was delighted in victory, it wasn't all clear sailing for the 32-year-old, who had to fight to the wire and navigate mid-field traffic to chase down teammate Whincup, who led for the majority of the race.

Starting on pole, Whincup led up until lap 77 before the championship leader slipped him on turn 13.

As van Gisbergen passed the chequered flag on Sunday he became just the seventh driver to win 10 races in a season, with no driver ever losing the championship from that position.

He picked up the maximum points over two races and will head into next weekend's Townsville Supersprint favoured to continue his exceptional form.
