Rangers set to end Celtic reign after win

Rangers have taken a massive step towards denying their Glasgow rivals Celtic a record 10th successive Scottish title with a 1-0 home victory in the traditional start-of-year Old Firm derby.

An own goal from Celtic's Callum McGregor settled the match in the 70th minute, shortly after his teammate Nir Bitton was sent off for a professional foul.

Rangers, managed by former Liverpool star Steven Gerrard, now lead second-placed Celtic by 19 points, albeit having played three matches more.

Visitors Celtic had dominated the first half of the traditional fixture but a string of saves from Allan McGregor, most notably when he turned Leigh Griffiths' curling shot onto the post, kept the hosts level.

And Rangers took full advantage by scoring from a corner after Bitton's 62nd minute foul on Alfredo Morelos.

Celtic threw on their Australian international Tom Rogic in the dying minutes and the Socceroo did make a belated impact.

Rogic had one shot deflected wide and also delivered a magnificent pass which got caught underneath the feet of striker Odsonne Edouard as Celtic sought an equaliser in vain.
