Jockey 'expressed concern' about Admire Rakti

WARNING: Some viewers may find the above video offensive

After Tuesday's Melbourne Cup tragedy, with favourite Admire Rakti eased out of the race before he collapsed in his stall and died, reports have emerged that jockey Zac Purton had warned Rakti’s owner of his concerns.

"The track is hard, very hard for him," Purton reportedly told Japanese owner Riichi Kondo.

The Courier-Mail claims Kondo told his party not to punt on Admire Rakti 'for fear of “using up too much luck”'.

The revelations come as footage is released of the moments after the race in which Rakti collapsed in the stalls.

With 800 metres to go the horse was not responding and Purton began to have suspicions all was not well.

"I didn't know it was as bad as it was," he said.

"I'm just shattered."

The cause of the death has been identified as acute heart failure.

"It was a sudden death syndrome, it does happen very, very rarely in race horses,” Racing Victoria Chief Vet Brian Stewart said.

"I think our incidents in Victorian racing is 0.007 percent so it's a freak accident.”

German raider Protectionist stormed home to claim the Cup by four lengths in a flying finish to Australia's richest race.

But for the racing community, jubilation was shot through with sorrow.

The public also took to social media to express their disdain.

Vets were also forced to euthanise seventh-place Melbourne Cup runner Araldo last night after he broke a bone in his right leg.

The Ballymore Stables-horse was spooked by a spectator waving a flag and kicked out at a fence when returning to the mounting yard.

Scans later revealed the horse had broken the pastern in his right hind leg, and the injury was severe enough to have the animal euthanised.

Protectionist to call Australia home

Germany's Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist is beginning his new life as an Australian a day after making history at Flemington.

The five-year-old will head to the Newcastle stable of Kris Lees where he will be trained for Australian Bloodstock.

The syndication company raced him in the Cup in partnership with his previous owners under trainer Andreas Wohler.

AB principals Jamie Lovett and Luke Murrell will now set about selling the shares opened up by the finalisation of the foreign ownership.

"At this stage we will sit down with the ownership group, probably in the next seven days, and just work out a plan for him," Lovett said.

"There's nothing in concrete. These horses haven't always responded to our training so we've got to make sure we get it right."

Lovett said the plan was to give the horse a break and prepare him for races over the Sydney autumn carnival.
