Green Moon in Cup doubt

Beaten Cox Plate favourite Green Moon will be assessed back at his Macedon Lodge stables before a decision is made as to whether the six-year-old goes onto the Melbourne Cup.

Green Moon ran seventh in Saturday's race, but never looked competitive after being forced to race wide early in the race.

Jockey Craig Williams admitted that he had not given the Robert Hickmott trained import the best ride, but that something didn't seem right about the way he finished off the race.

It was a disappointing day for owner Lloyd Williams, with his other cup hope, Midas Touch, well beaten in the Drake International Cup (2500m).

Green Moon is now out to $17 for the Melbourne Cup, Midas Touch is $67, while the big mover in Cup markets was Ethiopia, after his brave fourth in the Cox Plate.

Ridden on the speed, Ethiopia battled on well and lost few friends with his performance.

Connections will now accept for the Melbourne Cup with the AJC Derby winner on Monday, and as a result is now as short as $11 with some bookmakers for the race on November 6.

Southern Speed's fast finishing sixth sees her into $41 for the Melbourne Cup, but the Mackinnon Stakes looms as a more likely target for the mare.

French gallopers Dunaden and Americain both stifle Melbourne Cup betting at $6.50 and $7.50 respectively.
