Matt White's Oaks Day preview

Thursday is Crown Oaks Day at the Melbourne Cup Carnival and as always there will be plenty of celebrities with me in the Lavazza Marquee. But the stars will have a lot to live up to after what we witnessed on Tuesday.

I’ve never seen anything like the madness that surrounded football superstar Alessandro Del Piero on Melbourne Cup Day.

If there’s one thing the Lavazza crew love more than star power, it’s Italian star power! And with Del Piero spending most of his career in Turin where Lavazza coffee comes from, it had all the right ingredients for a great day.

This carnival hasn’t been a great one for the punters so far. The bookies have been almost literally tripping over their cash on their way out of Flemington – I don’t think I’ve ever seen a happier group of people! After their amazing day on Saturday, I did spot one bookie celebrating with a very big cigar and I reckon that says it all.

While the bookies have had a field day, we have won quite a lot of money over the first two days in the Lavazza Marquee. We had a ripping start on Saturday, winning more than $6000 for Vision Australia, and we ended up slightly ahead on Tuesday.

So now to the Crown Oaks, the feature of Thursday’s races. The Wakeful Stakes is the typical lead-up race to the Oaks so it’s no surprise to see Zydeco the clear favourite after her Wakeful victory on Saturday.

If this week has taught us anything, it’s that form is pretty much all you’ve got to go on.

There were plenty of people who told me on Tuesday that their horse looked great, was refreshed and was ready to win the Melbourne Cup. But unless you’ve got form, it’s all hearsay and whispers. It hasn’t exactly been a carnival for favourites, in fact Zydeco has been one of the only favourites to get through so far. But she’s the class horse in this field and her run in the Wakeful would have definitely raised a few eyebrows. We backed her on Saturday and I can’t go past her for the Oaks. For the minor placings, I’m going to go with Dear Demi and Maraatib.I backed Dear Demi in the Wakeful as well and I think she’s the main danger to Zydeco. Mind you, I thought the favourites were the ones to beat in the Cup and we all know how that worked out!Maraatib ran a nice second in the Wakeful and along with Transonic – who was third in the Wakeful – they are offering a bit of value in the markets at this stage. I’d expect those two to tighten a little bit and I certainly wouldn’t rule them out.Matt White is the Channel7 Today Tonight host and racing commentator.CROWN OAKS DAY – TELECAST TIMESSydney

Great legs .. BUT... sadly this is what went across world. Wonder what her reaction was seeing Wednesday's news. Matt White is boring, monotonous.
