The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes star Rachel Zegler has paid tribute to the main character of the original franchise, Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence), at the prequel's premiere.
Set 60 years before the events of The Hunger Games, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes premiered on Sunday (November 5) after receiving an exemption from SAG-AFTRA that allowed promotion of the film to continue.
Rachel Zegler, who plays Lucy Gray Baird in the movie, attended the premiere in a dress honours Katniss's moniker, 'The Girl on Fire', and one of her most recognisable outfits.
In The Hunger Games, Katniss earns the nickname 'The Girl on Fire' thanks to her literally fiery outfits created by her designer, Cinna (Lenny Kravitz). One bursts into flames during a parade, and another does the same just before she enters the Games.
In the franchise's second instalment, Catching Fire, Katniss wears a wedding dress that turns into a black Mockingjay gown after it ignites at the bottom.
This is the outfit that Zegler's The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes premiere dress pays homage to. As seen below, Zegler's black gown tapers to a mermaid-fit style tail, made of a striking red fabric that looks like flames.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set in the same fictional universe as the original Hunger Games films, all of which are based on novels by Suzanne Collins. The prequel centres on 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth), the villain of the first films and the future president of Panem, and his mentee Lucy Gray Baird (Zegler).
Despite comments that she'd be up for a return to Panem, Jennifer Lawrence confirmed she wouldn't be making a cameo in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
In response to a rumour that she'd appear in the film as Katniss's grandma, Lawrence joked: "Oh, 'cause I'm 49 in Hollywood years, huh? No! That's not true."
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will be released in cinemas on November 17.
