Quirk cops two-week ban for "love tap"

Sunwolves flanker Ed Quirk has been issued with a two-week ban for the "love tap" that saw him controversially red-carded in Friday night's Super Rugby clash against the Queensland Reds.

Quirk struck Reds five-eighth Hamish Stewart on the face with a closed fist while both players were at the bottom of the ruck, but did so with such minimal force that both coaches were left in dismay and fearing for the future of the sport.

The red card was upheld by SANZAAR's foul play committee at a hearing on Sunday evening but former Reds player Quirk won't actually miss a minute of Super Rugby, with the suspension only covering the fortnight up to and including August 4 and the Sunwolves not making the finals.
