QB Justin Fields, No. 1 overall recruit for 2018, commits to Georgia

Georgia is off to a 5-0 start and ranked No. 5 in the country thanks in large part to the efforts of true freshman quarterback Jake Fromm. Now the Bulldogs are getting even stronger at QB.

Justin Fields, the No. 1 overall prospect for the Class of 2018 in 247 Sports' composite rankings, committed to the Bulldogs on Friday. The dual-threat QB from Harrison High School in Kennesaw, Ga., northwest of Atlanta, had previously committed to Penn State but reopened his recruitment in June.

Georgia, Florida State and Auburn were the finalists for his services, but the Bulldogs had some built-in advantages. In addition to being close to home, Fields' sister Jaiden, a junior at Harrison, has already committed to play softball at UGA.

Fields will walk into a star-studded quarterback room in Athens, joining fellow five-star recruits Fromm and Jacob Eason, whose injury in the season opener cleared the way for Fromm to step in and star. Where the newcomer might fit in is an issue for Kirby Smart and his staff to sort out, but a problem they could not be happier to have.
