Test spinner Nathan Lyon wants his late-blooming NSW teammate Sean Abbott selected in Australia's Test squad.

Cricket Australia is expected to announce a 17-man squad on Thursday, with Abbott enhancing his case with a breakthrough first-class century.

The 28-year-old has also claimed 14 wickets at an average of 18 in three Shield games to press for inclusion in the Test squad.

Selectors are expected to include young guns Will Pucovski, 22, and Cameron Green, 21, in an expanded squad for the four-Test series against India start December 17 in Adelaide.

Legspinner Mitchell Swepson is in the frame to earn a call-up as back-up for Test spinner Nathan Lyon, who is pushing Abbott's case.

Abbott took 4-33 and cracked his maiden first-class century in the Blues' Sheffield Shield win against Tasmania which ended on Wednesday.

"He is digging deeper than I have ever seen," Lyon said.

"He has got all the talent in the world. He is one of the guys in Australian cricket that can do all three areas.

"He is getting to exceptional standards in all three - his bowling is exceptional, he's one of the best fielders in the country and his batting has improved out of sight."

Queenslander Michael Neser and Tasmania's Jackson Bird are other leading contenders to cover for frontline pacemen Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and James Pattinson.

Star batsmen Steve Smith and David Warner are returning from IPL duties while Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head and Matthew Wade are other incumbents in the Test batting line-up.

Australia would normally name a smaller squad but require cover for potential injury replacements and/or COVID-19 substitutes.
