Premier League: Origi torments Everton in another Merseyside derby, Mount's stunner lifts Chelsea (video)
Divock Origi might not have anything personal against Everton. But he does have five goals against them.
Origi’s brace helped Liverpool beat Everton 5-2 in an entertaining Merseyside derby on Wednesday, and he now has scored the third-most Premier League goals for the Reds in the rivalry.
Elsewhere, Mason Mount’s stunning volley lifted Chelsea past Aston Villa 2-1, while Leicester City won again to return to second place in the table.
Origi, Liverpool hammer Everton
Liverpool stayed eight points clear atop the table thanks in part to Origi’s two goals. His first came in the sixth minute on a slick through-ball from Sadio Mané:
After Xherdan Shaqiri doubled the lead and Everton pulled one back through Michael Keane, Origi put Liverpool up 3-1 with a glorious touch and finish:
Mané and Everton’s Richarlison also scored right before halftime, and Georginio Wijnaldum added Liverpool’s fifth goal shortly before the final whistle.
Origi’s five career goals against Everton trail only Steven Gerrard (nine) and Robbie Fowler (six) in Liverpool’s Premier League history.
Mount’s volley propels Blues
Christian Pulisic started yet again for Chelsea, but Mount made the biggest impact with his goal shortly after halftime.
After Willian waited a seemingly interminable amount of time to make a move out wide, his ball in was chested into the air by Tammy Abraham, and Mount did the rest:
Abraham scored the opener, while Trezeguet leveled for Villa before the break.
Jamie Vardy, Leicester City back in second
While Liverpool runs away atop the table, Manchester City tries to climb back in the title race, and Chelsea continues to impress despite its youth, the fourth top-four spot sure seems like it’s going to go to Leicester with each passing day.
The Foxes beat Watford 2-0 on Wednesday to move back into second place, and Jamie Vardy scored his league-leading 14th goal from the penalty spot:
James Maddison added insurance in the fifth minute of stoppage time, and Leicester put together another solid all-around effort.
It may not be 2016, but the Foxes will likely play a major part in this title race.
