Phil Tufnell lifts the lid on hilarious sledge from Ian Healy

Former England Test spinner Phil Tufnell has revealed one of the funniest sledges he’s ever received.

‘Tuffers’ is in Australia on commentary duties for the Big Bash, and his efforts have been typically hilarious.

During Wednesday night’s clash between the Renegades and Sixers, Tufnell opened up about a brutal sledge he received from Ian Healy back in the day.

Recalling a Test match between Australia and England at the Gabba in the early 90s, Tufnell revealed how Healy sledged him from behind the stumps as he was facing up to Shane Warne.

“I came in and took guard – because I’ve seen people do that before – I thought ‘I’d better look like I know what I’m doing’,” Tufnell said.

“And just as Warney was tossing the ball up, getting ready to bowl, Ian Healy has gone: ‘Tuffers, can you lend me your brain, I’m building an idiot’.”

Tufnell said he didn’t immediately understand the joke, vindicating the sledge.

Tufnell played 42 Tests for England, taking 121 wickets.

On the field, the Renegades romped to a seven-wicket win to revive their Big Bash season.

Kane Richardson (3-26) and Mohammad Nabi (4-25) led the onslaught as they restricted the home side to 9-115, before sauntering to victory in 13 overs in front of a crowd of 16,281.

Nabi finished the game off in fitting fashion when he launched Steve O’Keefe for a massive six over extra cover.
