Kansas City Chiefs fans don't have to worry about having Patrick Mahomes for the start of the 2021 season. Mahomes underwent toe surgery in February, but believes he could play in a game right now, according to team reporter Matt McMullen.
Mahomes isn't fully recovered from that surgery yet, but he's ahead of schedule. He admitted he still needs to do more work in his recovery, but added added, "If there was a game (today), I'd be able to play in it, I think."
The surgery was supposed to keep Mahomes out for "several months," but he was always expected to be ready for the start of the 2021 NFL season. Thursday's news should provide hope to Chiefs fans that will still be the case.
Patrick Mahomes looking for another Super Bowl win
As long as Mahomes is healthy, the Chiefs will remain one of the biggest contenders to win the Super Bowl in 2021. Mahomes has proven to be the best young quarterback in football, winning the MVP award in 2018, and making the Pro Bowl every year since.
Oddsmakers at BetMGM like the Chiefs to once again make it back to the big game. The Chiefs are listed at +210 to win the AFC, the best odds of any team in the conference. If BetMGM is right, the Chiefs could have an opportunity to get revenge on Tom Brady and the Bucs, who are the favorites to win the NFC at +275.
