The Panthers announced Wednesday that they will be bringing back Marty Hurney to be the team's interim GM after firing Dave Gettleman.

Hurney was with the Panthers from 1998-2012 and was named the GM in 2002, right before the Panthers earned a Super Bowl berth in 2003. They eventually lost that Super Bowl to the Patriots.

Hurney stayed on as the team's GM until the 2012 season when he was fired. But that doesn't mean he lost touch with the Panthers.

“I never lost the connection with the organization,” Hurney said. “I’ve gained a lot of perspective and have looked at things in different ways. I think I can help this team in a lot of areas. I think I’ve grown. And I feel I’m better prepared to come in this time and do a better job than I did over the 12 years I was general manager last time.”

Hurney was also responsible for drafting every one of the team's captains, including Cam Newton, Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis, Greg Olsen, Ryan Kalil and Charles Johnson.
