It’s no secret that the pandemic has caused people to move less. Between working from home and binging TV shows, this new sedentary lifestyle caused the World Health Organization to increase its recommended range of exercise for adults. The new guidelines recommend 2.5–5 hours of moderately intense physical activity and 1.25–2.5 hours of vigorous physical activity per week.

If you need help getting in a little more activity, a small exercise machine may be helpful. Take an elliptical machine, for example. Over 7,000 Amazon shoppers give its best-selling mini elliptical machine by Stamina 5 out of 5 stars. It retails for less than $100 and is so compact; you can store it in a closet or use it under your desk.

An elliptical machine is a low-impact trainer. Your feet never leave the pedals, so it’s like you’re walking on air — or pushing through it, depending on your resistance level. It provides a more comfortable way to workout for people with knee or joint problems, without sacrificing intensity.

A study published in the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine looked at marathon runners and found that most people experience an impact of up to 2.8 times their body weight during a run, affecting joints in the feet, legs and more. Slowing down and walking causes less impact on those joints, but an elliptical provides even less.

This mini strider is incredibly quiet — you can use it while you work from home standing or sitting. It’s compact and light (only 24 pounds!), so whether you want to keep it under your desk or move it to the living room to use while watching TV, it’s pretty easy to transport.

And while this mini version of the larger elliptical machines doesn’t have any handles for holding on, it forces you to use your core to keep you balanced while using it in a standing position.

You can increase your workout intensity by turning the adjustable dial-up and check out your stats with the display monitor. The monitor will show your exercise time, calories burned, the number of strides per minute and total strides overall.

“I love this thing!” wrote one Amazon reviewer. “At first, it was hard to balance, and I would have to grab the wall. After about 3 weeks of using it 3–4 days a week, I was able to leave the wall. Then, after about 3 months, I had the hang of balancing while walking, and I began using 3-pound weights for both of my arms.”

This mini elliptical machine is further proof that you don’t need to spend a lot of money or have a lot of space to get in a good workout at home.

If you’re looking for more ways to workout from home, check out this rowing machine on Amazon that also costs less than $100.
