Will Zalatoris' putt to force a playoff in the U.S. Open had a lot of money riding on it.
Zalatoris had the most riding on it, of course, but one bettor at BetMGM had to sweat a nice bet on Matthew Fitzpatrick as Zalatoris' potential birdie putt rolled right toward the hole.
Zalatoris' putt was agonizingly close but just wide, and Fitzpatrick won the U.S. Open.

For one bettor, that inch or so was the difference in winning $70,000.
Bettor had faith in Matthew Fitzpatrick
At BetMGM, one bettor took Fitzpatrick to win the U.S. Open at 28-to-1 odds. He or she put $2,500 on it. Fitzpatrick was tied for the 10th longest odds before the tournament started.
The win was worth $70,000.

There were nervous moments. Fitzpatrick had a couple of bad drives in the final few holes of the final round, but each time he had a great save. That included a big second shot from the sand on the 18th hole that saved par. Then Zalatoris had a chance to tie and force a playoff with his putt for birdie, and that shot looked good the entire way, only to stay a little bit to the left of the hole.
That near-miss set off a celebration for Fitzpatrick and his family, as Fitzpatrick took home his first major win. There was probably at least a fist pump too from the bettor who had enough faith in Fitzpatrick to put $2,500 on him to win before the U.S. Open started.
