North AFL young gun Stephenson breaks hip

North Melbourne midfielder Jaidyn Stephenson is in hospital with a broken hip because of a booze-fuelled bike accident at home.

Stephenson, who joined North as part of Collingwood's 2020 trade exodus, was taken to hospital on Friday.

Kangaroos football manager Brady Rawlings says the accident, set to delay the 22-year-old's return to pre-season training, put a dampener on Stephenson's promising first year at the club.

"We're disappointed with his poor judgement and his reckless action has resulted in quite a painful injury for him," Rawlings said.

"Jaidyn's pretty flat at the moment.

"He's a bit sick and sorry."

Stephenson fell off his mountain bike in his backyard, having attempted to perform a trick after drinking at home with housemates.

"He lost balance and fell onto a concrete paver," Rawlings said.

"Initially, after the accident, Jaidyn was able to walk but the pain progressed to a point that an ambulance was called.

"He was kept in overnight and he looks like he might be laid up for a while.

"He'll have a stay in hospital while his surgeon decides whether he'll need surgery."
