Commentator slammed for awful Harvey Weinstein joke

Renowned NFL commentator Al Michaels has landed himself in hot water with an in-game joke about disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein.

During Monday's match-up between the New York Giants and the Denver Broncos, the long-time NBC broadcaster produced a regrettable moment of commentary.

As you can hear in the video above, Michaels thought it was a good idea to compare the Giants’ struggles to those of Weinstein, who is facing numerous allegations of sexual misconduct spanning decades.

Michaels later offered an on-air apology.

“Sorry I made a reference earlier before, I tried to be a little flip about somebody obviously very much in the news all over the country," he said.

"It was not meant in that manner. So, my apologies. And we’ll just leave it at that."

He was understandably called out for his inappropriate remark on social media.

Michaels isn't the first person to try to joke about the Weinstein scandal, with British comedian James Corden also slammed recently.

Corden was forced to apologise after he opened a charity gala with a series of tasteless jokes about the movie producer.

Taking to Twitter, the 39-year-old released a statement saying he was "truly sorry" for his actions after he was slammed by fans and multiple victims of Weinstein.

"To be clear, sexual assault is no laughing matter. I was not trying to make light of Harvey’s inexcusable behavior," James said in the first of two tweets before adding "but to shame him, the abuser, not his victims. I am truly sorry for anyone offended, that was never my intention."
