4th and 1 with Adrian Arciuli

From Jarryd Hayne's benching to the Patriots undefeated run, 7 News Sport Journalist Adrian Arciuli reviews Week 7 of the NFL and looks forward to the Week 8 action on 7mate.

NO ACTION FOR HAYNE

For the first time in his NFL career Jarryd Hayne was inactive for the San Francisco 49ers.

However, it wasn’t a huge shock that Hayne didn’t suit up in the 20-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

With the returns of Reggie Bush and Bruce Ellington, Hayne was squeezed out of his role as back up running back and first choice punt returner.

It’s not a huge setback and it’s all part of the learning process for Hayne and I expect him back on the game day roster very soon.

ON THE OUTER: Bush likely to take over punt return duties

DOWN UNDER: 49ers NFL plotting bringing game to Sydney

The 49ers offence was inept against the Seahawks and quarterback Colin Kaepernick continues to struggle against any defence that can generate a solid pass rush.

San Francisco is 2-5 and will likely (as predicted) finish bottom of the NFC West unless they can find a way to get their offence going.

PATRIOTS STAY UNDEFEATED

The New England Patriots struck a decisive blow in the race for the AFC East title with a thrilling 30-23 win over the New York Jets.

The Jets were very much in the contest and it could have been a different story had Brandon Marshall caught a touchdown pass that would have put the Jets 8 points in front, early in the fourth quarter.

But they had to settle for a field goal and Tom Brady would throw touchdown passes to Danny Amendola and Rob Gronkowski to seal a sixth straight win for New England.

GIANTS EDGE PAST COWBOYS

The New York Giants heaped more misery on the Dallas Cowboys with a 27-20 win in the NFC East divisional showdown.

The Cowboys’ offence looked a lot better with Matt Cassel at quarterback, despite the veteran throwing a pick six.

It was a wacky game with the Giants offence never really getting going but their defence and special teams were the difference.

Giants wide receiver Dwayne Harris came back to haunt his former team with a 100 yard kick-off return touchdown with seven minutes to play.

The Cowboys are 2-4 and still yet to win a game without quarterback Tony Romo, but they are set to get back star wide receiver Dez Bryant this week.

AUSSIE WATCH

BRAD WING – A solid night for Wing after a disappointing performance against the Eagles a week ago.

He punted five times for 235 yards, with his longest effort going for 53 yards.

JORDAN BERRY – Not much action for Berry in the Pittsburgh Steelers shock 23-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Berry only punted twice for 91 yards.

WEEK 8

DETROIT LIONS AT KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

LIVE AND FREE ON 7MATE FROM 1.30AM AEDT MONDAY

The Chiefs will look to build on their upset win over Pittsburgh by beating Detroit in London at Wembley Stadium.

The Lions hopes of making the playoffs are all but gone and the fallout from their 1-6 start to the season has already started with offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi fired during the week.

It won’t surprise me if head coach Jim Caldwell is also shown the door soon.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS AT ST LOUIS RAMS

LIVE AND FREE ON 7MATE FROM 5AM AEDT MONDAY

San Francisco will go into this match on the back of a 10-day break with the extra rest a boost for running backs Carlos Hyde and Reggie Bush who have been struggling with injuries.

Hayne looks to have lost the punt returning job to Bush, but in my opinion he should suit up for this game and serve as the third choice running back.

The 49ers offence comes up against a Rams defence that is one of the best in the league and that spells trouble for quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Pressure is mounting on Kaepernick and another poor performance against the Rams could see him replaced by Blaine Gabbert.

The man to watch in this game is Rams running back Todd Gurley.

The rookie from Georgia is an absolute beast and I’m expecting another big performance from him.

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS AT DALLAS COWBOYS

LIVE AND FREE ON 7MATE FROM 830AM AEDT MONDAY

The Cowboys may be boosted by the return of Dez Bryant but I don’t think his return will help Dallas snap their four-game losing streak.

The Seahawks bounced back to form against the 49ers and they need to go on a big winning run if they’re any hope of catching Arizona in the NFC West.

Greg Hardy is already starting to become a problem in Dallas.

The defensive end got into an argument with Bryant on the sidelines before refusing to answer questions after the match.

GREEN BAY PACKERS AT DENVER BRONCOS

LIVE AND FREE ON 7MATE FROM 12.30PM AEDT MONDAY

The Broncos home ground advantage could prove the difference in a showdown of two of the league’s five unbeaten teams.

Denver’s defence has won them at least four games so far this season and eventually they won’t be able to cover for the offence’s struggles.

It’s a huge game for Peyton Manning to prove he doesn’t need to rely on his defence to win him games like they have done recently.

Green Bay was shaky in their last match against San Diego but escaped with a win.

Aaron Rodgers has been doing enough to win but the offence hasn’t been setting the world on fire in past weeks.
