College footballer hits opponent with sickening low blow

Ului Lapuaho, the BYU lineman who punched a Boise State player below the belt on the weekend, will not miss any game time.

Instead, Lapuaho has already been subject to team discipline, head coach Bronco Mendenhall said Monday.

"He has had team discipline issued. It’s not going to require missing any games. We have a very clear policy in place for personal fouls," Mendenhall said.

The incident occurred in the second quarter when Lapuaho dove to the ground to recover a fumble. It looked like Lapuaho had clear possession of the ball when Boise’s Chanceller James came crashing in, prompting Lapuaho’s punch.

As Mendenhall mentioned, Lapuaho was flagged for a personal foul penalty and video of the punch subsequently went viral during the game.

Though he did not offer specifics about Lapuaho’s punishment, Mendenhall said Monday he feels "comfortable" with the discipline he handed down.

"He made a mistake. He knows it. I know it. I think the world knows it. We’ve addressed it and plan to move forward," Mendenhall said.
