NFL bad beat: Over bettors on Chiefs-Chargers lose when wind blows extra point wide

For a moment, bettors on the Kansas City Chiefs-Los Angeles Chargers over were thinking they had a lucky win, or at least a push.

The first quarter of what was supposed to be a high-scoring game got off to a slow start, and it seemed like bettors who took over 54.5 or 55 points at BetMGM had no chance. Late in the game, the Chargers got into field-goal range, but were unusually aggressive. They went for the touchdown, presumably worried about Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes pulling out a win if he got the ball back. The Chargers got the touchdown in the final minute. Mike Williams' score gave the Chargers a 30-24 lead. That made it 54 points, with the extra point coming.

And then ... the extra point was missed. Oh, no.

The Chargers' first-year kicker is Tristan Vizcaino, and he missed two extra points Sunday. The lack of trust in Vizcaino had to be one reason the Chargers chased the touchdown at the end. But the Chargers had to feel he was good for the extra point. The weather didn't help. The kick was was pushed wide left. There were 20 mph winds at kickoff, and there were some strong gusts. Still, over bettors probably didn't feel like a wind-blown missed extra point would cost them a bet.

The Chiefs' final drive didn't get any points, as a Hail Mary fell short. In a few moments over bettors went from some euphoria on Williams' touchdown to ripping up a ticket.
