Runner wins race after shoving rival to the ground

A college athlete in the US has caused a stir after deliberately pushing a rival runner to the ground before going on to win the race.

Horizon University's Megan Mooney was behind Grandview University rival Brie Oakley during the final lap of their 1600m race.

As Mooney attempted to pass the frontrunner, she put her left hand in her opponent's back and sent her sprawling.

Oakley managed to get back to her feet, but despite a gallant effort couldn't reel in Mooney before they crossed the finish line.

Mooney's joy was short-lived however, with officials later reviewing the race and disqualifying her.
