Fanning encounters a shark on his return to the surf

Just weeks after surviving his encounter with a shark in South Africa, Mick Fanning returned to the water for the first time, only to cross paths with another shark.

Surfing on the northern NSW coast, Fanning was chased out of the water by the shark, forcing him to leap back onto the jet ski before returning to the shore before recounting exactly what he saw.

"There was a fin, there he is," Fanning told 60 Minutes as he pointed out to the surf.

"Straight out. I just saw it."

Despite the scare, Fanning has confirmed he will resume competition at next month's World Surf League event, the Billabong Pro in Tahiti.

On the same day, a surfer was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition after being attacked by a shark at Evans Head, south of Ballina.

The man survived, however he did sustain puncture wounds to his hands and legs and was stablised by paramedics on the beach.
