Spanish defender nicknamed 'The Koala' after climbing goalpost to defend corner

CD Cuartes captain Daniel Nadales has made headlines across Spain after climbing up the goalpost to defend a corner.

Nadales' unconventional piece of defending clearly wasn't seen by the referee who failed to take any action against the cheeky skipper during the match with CD Teruel.

Cuartes lost the game 3-1 despite their captain's last-ditch defending and the player himself admits it wasn't a pre-planned tactic.

“It was a corner. We were defending and the attacking team were very tall," Nadales told TN.

“The only way I could think to jump higher was to grab the post.

“It was spontaneous. I did not repeat it in the match. Afterwards I read the rules and now I know they can punish you for doing that.

“My teammates have taken it very well but they say I was crazy (to try it).”

He has been nicknamed 'El Koala' by his team since the incident.
